But it is not only that…Did you know that it is right here in Corfu that Ulysses met Alcinous’ daughter, Nausica, as described by Homer in the Odyssey? Now, we know what you are most interested in, so we will start giving you some helpful information about the islands, starting from…its best beaches!

Best Beaches

Corfu boasts an incredible array of stunning beaches, each offering a truly unique scenery and sea. The ones we want to suggest to you are Paleokastritsa Beach, Agios Gordios Beach, and Glyfada Beach.

Paleokastritsa Beach is famous for its crystalline waters and dramatic cliffs and is perfect for you if you love snorkeling and swimming. It is the most famous and photographed beach on the island because it is quite narrow and characterized by a very intense green given by the rich surrounding vegetation (you will feel like you are immersed in a real postcard!).

Agios Gordios Beach is ideal if you love sunbathing or if you are a water sports enthusiast. Located in the heart of Corfu, it is surrounded by hills covered with olive trees and has an ideal location for exploring the island by car or bicycle. By the way, remember that here in the evening, you can enjoy one of the best sunsets in Corfu!

Glyfada Beach
will enchant you with its golden sands and panoramic views, and it’s perfect if you are traveling with your friends because of its bars. A particularity of Glyfada is that on the left side, there is a small rocky area where you can find small and beautiful natural pools. To reach the beach, considered one of the best in Corfu, you must cross the heart of the island following a road full of curves towards Paleokastritsa.

Corfu - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

If you love to know more about Corfu’s history, you will surely be delighted by its rich heritage. In fact, the Old Town of Corfu is UNESCO-listed, and here you will see incredible labyrinthine streets, Venetian architecture, and charming squares. Venetian architecture, in particular, is due to Venice’s 400 years of occupation You will also find its influence on the nearby Greek islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Then, don’t miss the iconic Achilleion Palace, which was once home to Empress Elisabeth of Austria, or the ancient ruins of the Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the island!

Now, let’s continue our journey together: from Corfu we move to Skiathos. Keep reading!

Skiathos

Skiathos, which is a gem nestled in the Aegean Sea, is known for its stunning beaches, but like every other Greek island, it has a lot more to offer. For a better experience, visit the island from April to September, since the summer is the hottest but also the most expensive and crowded.

Best Beaches

Here on the most famous Greek islands of Sporades, you will find more than 60 beaches! Here, we will limit ourselves by suggesting 3 of the best:

Koukounaries Beach: It is famous for its golden sands and crystal-clear waters and is often referred to as one of the best beaches in Greece! It’s perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports, but here you will also find bars, taverns, and restaurants. The sea? It is spectacular; the sand is among the finest and softest you can imagine, and you will see a fabulous pine forest all around you.

Lalaria Beach: This beach is accessible only by boat. To reach it, you can get one of the many boats that depart from the old port of Skiathos. Once there, you will find

unique white pebbles, impressive rock formations, and incredibly turquoise waters! It is located in the northern part of the island. Be prepared to find a pristine beach with no amenities, just pure nature.

Banana Beach
: This beach is ideal for you if you are an adventure seeker because it offers a range of water sports activities, such as jet skiing, parasailing, and windsurfing, as well as lively beach bars. Banana Beach is characterized by golden sand and dense vegetation, and of course, you can enjoy one of the best sunsets on the island here!

Skiathos - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

Here in Skiathos, it would be best if you obviously visited the Old Town. Here, you will find typical cobblestone streets and discover historical landmarks such as the Bourtzi Fortress, which was built in the 13th century during the Venetian domination. Then, we suggest not to miss the Evangelista Monastery: it is located in the hills above Skiathos Town and dates back to the 18th century. From there, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire island! Finally, you can visit Kastro, a medieval village once the capital of Skiathos. It is unique because it is perched on a cliff that overlooks the sea.

Where To Eat

To eat local cuisine, you can visit Skiathos Town and try authentic tavernas. Here, you can try seafood dishes and homemade desserts while enjoying a typical view of the harbor. Other exciting places to eat are Troulos and Koukounaries villages: here, you can dine directly on the beach with menus inspired by Mediterranean tradition. Take advantage of the typical moussaka or grilled octopus! Skiathos is a little gem, it’s true. But you have a lot more to know about Greek islands: keep reading to discover the beautiful Paros!

Paros

Paros is a captivating Greek island where ancient history melts with stunning natural beauty. You will find picturesque villages, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. And remember to enjoy a good boat trip to Antiparos: a small island in the middle of the Cyclades archipelago divided by a narrow channel by Paros.

Best Beaches

Golden Beach: Its name is derived from the particular color of the sand, which glows under the sun and offers a specific view during the sunset. Golden Beach is located south-southeast near the village of Logaras, and it is perfect for sunbathing and water sports enthusiasts. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Paros, with its coastline of eight hundred meters and transparent waters.

Santa Maria Beach: Nestled in a scenic cove, Santa Maria Beach is ideal both for a group of friends and for families. It is located near Naoussa, on the island’s northeastern coast, and it is divided into two parts: Santa Maria and Mikri Santa Maria.

Here, you can obviously find sunbeds and umbrellas, spending a little bit more than average (around 25€ per day), but there are also accessible beach areas where you can rest in the middle of nature.

Kolymbithres Beach:
It is known for its unique rock formations sculpted by the sea, so here you will find the perfect spot for incredible photos! In Kolymbrites, you can explore the hidden coves and caves or enjoy the beach and the sports activities it offers: it is particularly suited for families with children because of its shallow waters. The beach is divided into two bays sheltered from the winds, so you can also enjoy a relaxing lunch at the beach bar here.

Paros - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

When in Paros, you should absolutely visit Parikia, its charming capital with typical narrow streets, Greek white houses, and Byzantine churches. Here we suggest going see “Panagia Ekatontapyliani,” the Church of a Hundred Doors, one of Greece’s oldest and most significant Christian monuments! Then, you can visit Noussa, a typical fishing village where Venetian fortifications represent the island’s rich history.

Where To Eat

In Parikia or Noussa, you will always find typical restaurants offering fresh seafood and panoramic views of the harbors. You will be immersed in a romantic and relaxing atmosphere while dining in elegant restaurants or typical tavernas. In particular, we suggest trying the lobster pasta or a fresh Greek salad, especially if you are visiting Paros in Spring or Summer!

Now you know Paros, but have you ever heard about Zakynthos? Be ready for incredible blue waters and stunning viewpoints!

Zakynthos

Welcome to the idyllic island of Zakynthos, a pearl of the Ionian Sea, where you will see waters so blue that you won’t believe your eyes! Here you can choose from different stunning beaches (the most famous one is Navagio Beach) or explore ancient landmarks: whatever you do, you will like it a lot!

Best Beaches

Navagio Beach: it is also known as the “Shipwreck Beach” due to an enormous shipwreck of the merchant vessel Penagiotis, which in 1980 sailed from Turkey and, for adverse weather conditions, stopped near the cave of the beach. Navagio Beach is undoubtedly the most beautiful beach in Zakynthos and one of the five or six most stunning beaches in Greece! You can access the beach only from the sea and enjoy a good swim in electric blue waters, whose colors derive from the numerous sulfurous caves that surround the beach. Before leaving the beach, remember to see it from the viewpoint located on top of the peninsula!

Gerakas Beach: Nestled on the southern coast of Zakynthos, Gerakas Beach is a protected nesting site for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles. In fact, if you are willing to wake up before dawn from May to October, you will have the opportunity to witness the hatching of turtle eggs and admire dozens of specimens reaching the sea! Gerakas is the southernmost beach on the island and certainly one of the most beautiful: it’s formed by a long sand tongue that ends with a small promontory that dives directly into the sea. In particular, this promontory is famous because it is entirely made of clay!

Laganas Beach: Laganas boasts an immense sandy beach and is equipped for every need: here, you can rent deck chairs and umbrellas, play beach volley, practice water sports, and participate in boat trips on the island of Marathonissi and the caves of Keri. The most beautiful characteristic of this beach is that you will find the small island of Agios Sostis in front of it for a surprising natural scene.

The continuation of Laganas Beach is Kalamaki, and together, they are part of the Marine Park of Zakynthos, where the famous Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs.

Zakynthos - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

Like any other of the 7 most beautiful Greek islands we mention, you can also find historic monuments in Zakynthos that date back to the Venetian domination. An example could be the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos, which overlooks Zakynthos Town and offers a panoramic view of the island. Another interesting historical attraction is Bochali, located near the Venetian Castle; it is a charming hilltop village known for its picturesque streets and the Church of St. George.

Where To Eat

Zakynthos Town, Porto Azzurro Beach, or Alykes are all great places to try local cuisine and eat delicious Grilled dishes. Here we suggest eating a seafood platter: you will be surprised by the freshness of the food at a much lower price compared with other countries. Then, you can try the famous Kleftiko, a dish made of slow-cooked lamb marinated in garlic, lemon, and Greek herbs.

Now that you know Zakynthos better, why don’t we go together to one of the most famous Greek islands, thanks to its mythology? Keep reading to discover Naxos!

Naxos

Naxos is an enchanting island in the heart of the Cyclades archipelago, characterized by pristine beaches and charming villages. It is the right stop to enjoy an authentic Greek experience.

Best Beaches

Agios Prokopios: This charming beach is located on the island’s west coast, just after the beach of Agios Georgios, and is about 5 kilometers away from the town of Naxos. A long coastline of soft golden sand stretches for about 1.5 km! As you can imagine, the sea is crystal clear here with typical turquoise waters, which also create different and picturesque shades depending on the currents. You will feel like you’re swimming in the Caribbean Sea!

Plaka beach
is located on the west coast of Naxos, between the beaches of Agia Anna and
Orkos and it is a long stretch of clear sand with particular sand dunes behind. This beach stretches for over three kilometers so you will always find a spot and you will always feel like it is manageable. In addition, the transparent sea hosts small rocks flushed with water, which creates an effect similar to a coral reef!

Naxos - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

Did you know? Naxos holds a rich tapestry of history, culture, and mythology and is associated with the labyrinth myth, famously intertwined with the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur! Here in Naxos, we suggest seeing Portara, an iconic marble gate, standing at the entrance of the city, which dates back to the 6th century BC. Then, also in Naxos you can find a Venetian Castle perched atop a rocky hill and, representing a testament of the island’s medieval history. Another thing you shouldn’t miss is the Temple of Apollo: located near Portara, only a few columns remain standing, but it’s still easy to imagine the grandeur of this ancient structure dedicated to the god of light.

Where To Eat

In Naxos Town or along Naxos’ coastline, you can experience beachfront dining or local tavernas and try the typical Naxian cuisine. In particular, Naxian cuisine is characterized by grilled seafood, local cheese (such as graviera and arseniko), and aromatic herbs.

You can also try the famous Kitron, a liqueur made from citron leaves.

From Naxos, we now sail to the famous Santorini: one of the most romantic Greek islands!

Santorini

Whether you’re soaking up the sun on the beach, exploring ancient ruins, or enjoying an incredible sunset, your trip to Santorini will make you feel at peace and you will want to come back again and again.

Best Beaches
Perissa Beach: Separated from the beach of Kamari by Mount Vouno, the famous Perissa Beach is located 15 kilometers from Fira, along the southeast of the island of Santorini. The beach is a long stretch of black sand (because of the island’s volcanic origin) extending for about 7 kilometers. The sea is crystal clear so it is ideal for snorkeling! You can spend an entire day here because at the beach there are taverns and restaurants where you can eat at affordable prices and bars where you can chill out at sunset and listen to DJs until late at night!

Cape Columbo Beach: It is one of the most isolated beaches of Santorini so it is ideal for you if you don’t love crowded places. It is located on the northeastern coast of Santorini, not far from the village of Oia. Also here you will find black sand and pebbles surrounded by cliffs and set in a fantastic natural environment. Because it is so remote, Cape Columbo beach could be more organized because it is so remote: you will only find a handful of sunbeds and a small tavern, but its beauty is still worth visiting.

Red Beach:
It is very famous because of the red colors of its rocks and sand: it has volcanic origin, and you can reach it by boat or car, then walk for about 10 minutes along a steep path. Here you can rent deck chairs and umbrellas, but there are no bars or restaurants, so we suggest bringing along food and drink supplies if you want to remain there the entire day.

Santorini - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

Your visit to Santorini would only be complete with exploring the ancient city of Akrotiri. Often referred to as the “Minoan Pompeii,” this archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into Santorini’s past. In fact, you can admire well-preserved ruins here that date back to the Bronze Age! Then, take the chance to wander through the narrow streets of Oia. Please remain until sunset to see one of the most spectacular natural shows you will ever see!

Where To Eat

In Ammoudi Bay, you can have fresh seafood dishes at seaside tavernas. We suggest trying local specialties like fava beans and tomato keftedes! Then, if you are looking for a truly unforgettable dining experience, book a table at one of Santorini’s cliffside restaurants in Fira or Oia: here you can enjoy panoramic views of the caldera while savoring gourmet Mediterranean cuisine.

Are you ready to know the last of the 7 most beautiful Greek Islands? Keep reading and discover the stunning Kos!

Kos

Kos is one of the treasures of the Aegean Sea, just off the coast of Turkey.  It is steeped in rich history and beauty and will make you enjoy wild nature and incredibly crystal clear seas.

Best Beaches

Paradise Beach: This beach truly delivers the promise of Its name! It is situated in the area of Kefalos, characterized by fine sand and crystal clear sea that slopes gently for the first 200 meters. The entire beach is equipped with sun beds and umbrellas and there are also different points where you can rent a pedalo or do water sports. But the most interesting thing is the nearby Bubble Beach: if you love snorkeling you shouldn’t miss it because

you will swim in the middle of tiny sulfurous bubbles in a super-fine sandy bottom!

Agios Stefanos Beach:
It is located on the island’s southern side, only 3 km from the quiet area of Kefalos. The most impressive trait of this beach is the presence, not far from the shore, of a beautiful island called Kastri. You can easily swim to reach it and, once there, you can visit a small white church with a blue roof. It is the monastery of Sant’Antonios, and you should ring the small bell next to the church: they say it will bring you luck!

Kos - Most Beautiful Greek Islands - BesTripTips

History

In most Greek islands, you will always find interesting historical places that are linked to mythology or ancient times that we all know thanks to books, films, and other testimonies. One of the attractions you shouldn’t miss in Kos is Asklepion: here you can linger under the tree where the famous Hippocrates taught and practiced medicine. Then, we suggest visiting the Ancient Agora to see the remains of temples or baths and the Castle of the Knights, to witness an interesting medieval structure and a beautiful view of the island.

Where To Eat

When in Kos, if you want to choose from different restaurants and try all the local dishes, we suggest going to the Old Town. Here, you will find a great deal of tavernas and fancy restaurants to enjoy Greek cuisine. You can try all the food you want but be sure to eat Gemista and Saganaki. Gemista is a plate made of stuffed vegetables (typically tomatoes, bell peppers, or zucchinis) filled with a flavorful mixture of rice, herbs, onions, and sometimes ground meat.
